The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

As I'm a Scottish blogger doing a project on a Scottish building, I thought I'd show pictures of an event at another Scottish building - and there is no other Scottish building finer than Edinburgh Castle.

Last night, my family and I were at the Tattoo. This is an annual event held over three weeks in August. It's popularity is such that tickets are booked months in advance. Here is just a little taster of what you can expect - the picture above shows a scenic view of Edinburgh facing South, taken from the Castle:

The start of the night with the Massed Pipes and Drums;

The motor cyclists are a group called The Little Imps and age from 5 to 16 years.

The Massed Pipes and Drums demonstrating one of their tricky configurations;

A visiting Band from America;

The Massed Pipes and Drums out in full force for the finale;

This was part of a tribute to the forces in Afghanistan. The picture was superimposed on the Castle walls; and finally -

The Lone Piper. I know it's small but he was very far away and high up! All the lights are doused and the Lone Piper stands high on the Castle ramparts for the finale.

The Jordan, New Zealand, Poland and The Ghurkas were represented as well.

Just for fun and because it's a bit of an experiment as we've (hubby!) never done anything like this before, here's the Tattoo with sound. Please ignore the anonymous head at the beginning!

I hope you enjoyed your little trip to the Tattoo this year and if you ever get the chance to go, I can highly recommend it.

  1. Hi,

    I'm Irene's sister and I was there too, sitting beside her. You've got some good pictures Irene, better than mine. It was amazing. Great atmosphere and the pipe bands were fantastic.
    Brilliant night!

  2. Hello Irene,
    I took my daughter and wee granddaughter to Edingburgh a few weeks ago and we spent a day at the castle. We loved it despite the rainy day we had , would have been wonderfulto see the tattoo ,

  3. Thanks so much for the visit to the Tattoo, Irene!
    The massed bands are great, but there's something really special about a lone piper - goes straight to my heart!

  5. I would love to be able to see the Tattoo in Edinburgh. We have a big one here in Halifax, but Edinburgh would be an extraordinary experience. Thanks so much for posting the photos! I've never been to Scotland, actually -- even though I'm over a quarter Scottish (I don't have the last name Scott-Stoddart for nothing, you know ... :) I must rectify that, soon!
