Progress

I'm pleased with progress on my little Cloth Merchant's Booth, especially the crusie lamps. I waited till dusk to take this picture as I wanted to see the effect of the lights. I've still to add a lantern and couple of candles and they're on order at present.

I've deviated a bit from the original building in that I've added some "stone wall" at the shelving unit. This was done using a stencil and compound, exactly like the exterior of the building. The walls are covered in a mix of Pollyfilla and pva then painted. The wall on the right is created using iron on floorboards then varnished. The other difference is the spice cabinet. I was unable to source a small enough one to sit on shelving but came across this little set of drawers which, I think, fits the bill nicely. The gap to the right is where my Inner Hall will be. I'm still playing with that photograph and will take pics as soon as I'm happy with it.

This is how it all looks at the moment. I used embroidery thread to create the little hanks of wool and I'm still searching for more suitable fabrics to increase stock. Once I get the Inner Hall sorted out, I can put in the flooring.

  1. It's coming together nicely. I like the graining in the wood. The glow from the cruise lamp is wonderful.

BTW Irene do you know anything about why that kind of lamp is called a 'cruise' lamp??

  2. Hello Norma, Thanks for your nice comment and no, I'm afraid I don't know where the name came from although I do know they have different names depending on the region. In the Shetland Isles and the Channel Islands they're known as "collie" lamps and in Cornwall they use the name "chill". It would be interesting to find out and if I do, I'll let you know.

  3. It's great and I'm looking forward to seeing it finished. I like the lights a lot. I had a look at Galdstone's land and saw the original of your room. You've done so far a wonderful work.
It must be difficult to recreate something that exists.

  4. Thanks for your nice comment Genevieve. The property's closed at the moment and re-opens in April. I can't wait, I've got lots I want to check up on and as a member I get in free. I've been lucky so far getting the right bits for this project. I just hope it continues.
