The Hingin' Lum

I have time this week to seriously crack on with progress to my Cobbler's accommodation and since my last post I have been on a roll!

Mr Bennett now has his "hingin' lum"

"Hingin' " in Scots reads "hanging" and a "lum" in Scots is a chimney.    A "hingin' lum" (or hanging chimney) is so called because of the canopy over the top which draws away the smoke.   They were mostly found in poorer houses or crofts.

To be honest, I've no idea whether there would have been a fireplace in the attic space of the RL building.   I've not had the chance to find out but because this particular room does not exist in the real building and is entirely my creation, I decided to put one in.

I have Elizabeth at Studio E to thank for the idea to create the fire similar to that which also appears in my Lawyer's room.

At the moment he's also got shelving.   There's a bed in the making and a stand to take his pieces of leather.   I've also had another go at whittling and have come up with little wooden shoe/boot forms.   (Last time it was cows' legs!).

From something that was a real struggle to put together, the ideas are coming thick and fast - who'd have believed it?

  1. Oh This is tooo funny! The first thing that I thought when I saw the photo was "WOW! HOW DID SHE MAKE THAT GREAT FIRE!!!!?"
Then I find out that you are giving me the credit for the idea? Really??? But Irene: I want one JUST LIKE YOURS!!!! :D
Meanwhile, I love your "Hingin lum" and the shelves and the way that your tiny attic room is taking on character. I am looking forward to seeing more of your carving skills throughout the room and also the shoes that will be filling up those shelves.
I am glad that your idea tap is turned full- on and that you are again, full- steam ahead! Isn't it a Fantastic Feeling when that happens?
Enjoy it to the MAX! :D

  3. Hello Irene,
I would of believed it! in fact I never doubted you! The fireplace is wonderful. It looks terrific and will add such a great touch of realism. Great work figuring out the shape of it. I can't wait to see more.

  5. Ciao Irene,! ....forse è la parte della costruzione che non corrisponde alla realtà, ma sono sicura che con la tua fantasia verrà fuori una stanza piena di carattere.;-)

  7. Thank you everyone for all your positive comments.

Elizabeth - you got the idea for the fire from the Dangerous Mezzo and shared the idea - I picked it up! It works brilliantly and has been admired by many so thank you again.

There's been a fair bit of progress on this room these past few days so I'll get more pictures up. Just waiting on a delivery of bits now.
