At long last!

At long long last I have started the desk for The Green Room.

Sitting here in my new hobby room, a neighbour hammering in new posts for the garden fence, the birds singing and the breeze blowing, I'm having a creative spurt.

It might not look like much at the moment and in fact it really started life as a cardboard prototype but given that I've not made a desk before and to be honest, I'm pretty pleased with the way it's going, I think this will stay as the actual desk.

I know it needs a lot of work from what you see here but it's a start.

My William & Mary mountboard desk - every home should have one!

This is Phase 2 of the W & M desk.   As you can see, drawers have been added and the "kneehole".   Rather than faff about with little strips of wood to edge the drawers, I had a bit of a lightbulb moment and used embroidery thread .   Once painted and varnished, hopefully it will simulate decorative trim. We shall see!  Little offcuts from plastic fencing were used to decorate the kneehole and beads (liberated from an old pair of earrings) were used as feet.

Ooops, squint door - that'll have to be fixed!

Once all the glue had dried, it was then given a couple of coats of ordinary household emulsion paint.

Now it has to be varnished.   I've no idea how many coats of varnish this will take before it achieves the look I want but I'll keep going till I'm happy with it.   In the meantime, I'll be ordering handles.

Later that afternoon..............

This is the desk in it's present state after 4 coats of varnish.   I don't really think any additional coats will make much difference now so it'll be left like this.   The annoying thing is, I found little key plates with thin wire handles in my stash.   Unfortunately for some reason, there are eight key plates but only six wire handles.   How annoying is that?   They were left over from another project so I guess I'll just have to get inventive.

The following day............

If I'd been paying attention when looking at the key plates, I'd have noticed that there were six key plates, six handles and two keyholes.    Perfect!   These have now been attached along with a door knob and hinges.

I give you my mountboard William & Mary kneehole desk.

  8. The desk turned out great. I would have never thought that you could use odd materials like cardboard and string and get it to look like carved wood. Keep up the good work!

  9. Hi Irene,

that's an amazing little desk, it doesn't look like card at all in the final pic. What a great way to furnish a house on a budget! Those drawer handles really finish it off nicely. Now are you going to attempt a cardborad chair to match?!! ;)

  12. Your desk is really good and looks like wood and the trim looks like it is fancy carved wood. A VERY clever and an innovative solution!
